Year 5-8 Wearable Arts Rehearsal

This afternoon Room 4 was lucky enough to be invited to the dress rehearsal of Muritai School's 2009 wearable arts show titled "A night at the museum". After we watched the show the children returned to class to discuss what they thought about it and how it made them feel. There was a range of responses from several children expressing that it made them feel good, happy, excited, and / or scared. It took awhile for them to work out that some of the costumes actually had people inside them that they couldn't see! They identified that the music, costumes and lights changed how they were feeling at the time.

Skipping

Every morning we go out into the quad to practise our skipping. Most of us found this really hard at the start because we didn't know when to jump, or how to avoid hitting ourselves with the skipping rope. Now most of us can do ten skips in a row without tripping over the rope! We are really happy now that we find it easy. Here are some pictures of us skipping on a sunny morning.

ICT

Each week our buddies from Room 7 visit us in Room 4. We have just started school and really enjoy visits from the 'older' children.

Today, Room 7 helped us during ICT time. They taught us how to use a mouse properly, and how to draw a picture using KidPix. We were very excited when we realised we could make the computer draw and write things. It was lots of fun drawing our own pictures. There was lots of laughter!

Art Expo

Years 1 - 4 students at Muritai School recently held an art exhibition displaying various pieces of work they have be working on during term 3. Room 4 spent some time looking at these various pieces of work and then had to choose their favourite and give an explanation as to why they thought it was a good piece of work. Their critiques were recorded on the videos posted below.

Writing Rotation

We love doing our writing rotation because we get to do lots of different fun activities.  Each day we do something different in our rotation which makes it interesting.  These are photos of us doing the following activities:

  • practising with a pencil using stencils to draw letters, numbers and pictures.
  • practising writing letters and numbers on special cards with a whiteboard pen
  • practising making different letters and numbers using play dough (that's our favourite)
  • practising writing letters and numbers on a whiteboard with a whiteboard pen

How tall are we?

Room 11 have been working on understanding the length of a metre. They practiced estimating a metre both vertically and horizontally. All of their guesses were different and a few were completely right! They checked their chalk guesses with a metre ruler.
Room 11 then had fun estimating whether students in Room 4 were a metre or less tall. Their results showed that all of the students were taller than a metre! It was interesting to find out Room 4's ideas on how tall they thought they were and how they thought they compared in height to others in our classroom.  Overall it was an exciting learning opportunity enjoyed by all.

Cross Country!

Yesterday we took part in our first cross country day with Muritai School. Dressed in our house colours we made our way down to Williams Park in Days Bay, Eastbourne . The sun was shining so it was a great start to our day. It was exciting to go somewhere out of school.
We really liked running across the finish line and having our family there to watch us.

Our trip to see the Vectra Orchestra

Room 4 was excited about starting their week with a trip into Wellington to see the Vectra Orchestra at the Michael Fowler Centre. Even more exciting was that we would get to be buddied with people from Room 7! It was Paige's first day in Room 4 and she had the special opportunity to go on this trip. For some of us it was our first time on a bus. We braved the cold and wet weather to learn about the different parts of an orchestra and listen to the Sacred Heart Ukulele group. They were great. Some year 5's from Muritai also joined in with their ukulele's on one of their songs. We also watched dancers from Footnote. At the end we got to be conductors and we copied what the conductor did for a whole song. He was very funny. We really enjoyed our first class trip.
